Living with spinal injury

Dan Nicholls
Dan’s story…

How it all began

On December 30th 2003, Daniel Nicholls was enjoying his fifth week of a gap year between leaving school and going to college.

Daniel was on Australia’s world-famous Bondi Beach. Standing in water up to his knees, he dived into a wave. Daniel had no idea that a sandbank lay hidden beneath the water and the force of his dive into it broke his neck.

After the accident

The result of his injuries was that Daniel was left paralysed from the arms down with very little movement in his hands. On returning to the UK, Dan spent a year at Stoke Mandeville Hospital – a leading centre for spinal injury – undergoing extensive physio- and occupational therapy through March 2005, when he was finally ready to move home.

Helping Daniel get back on his feet

Daniel’s father, David Nicholls, set up the NSIF as a result of this accident. It’s dedicated to raising money into research that will hopefully provide a breakthrough in the treatment of spinal injuries. Its aim is to help Daniel, and many others like them, get back to their feet.
